Difficulties with compulsory programme

Games of the 2nd round took place at Moscow Open 2008.

By the Swiss system of drawing the players who have the first numbers in start lists have to compete with the players from the middle of the list at start tours. Start lists are formed in decreasing order of FIDE index. So at first favourites of the tournament play the players with lower FIDE index. But in spite of that not all the favourites of “Moscow Open 2008” manage to win and pass the compulsory programme.

At the 2nd round Vadim Zvjaginsev(2677, Russia) didn’t manage to win an international master Victor Ivanov (2495, Russia), they ended in a draw by 22nd move. The winner of the first «Moscow open 2005» Farrukh Amonatov (2649, Tajikistan) ended also in a draw against Shukhrat Safin (2493, Uzbekistan). Mikhail Kobalia (2623, Russia) loosed to Igor Naumkin (2475, Russia).

At women’s tournament many famous players didn’t manage to win not so eminent competitors at the 2nd round. The winner of Europe Championship 2005, Kateryna Lahno (2475, Ukraine) and Irina Semenova (2270, Russia), Natalija Pogonina (2476, Russia) and Olga Iljushina (2286, Russia), Champion of the USA Irina Krush (2473) and Valentina Golubenko (2264, Croatia) ended in draw. Svetlana Matveeva (2433, Russia) loosed to her compatriot, FIDE master Zoja Severiukhina (2199, Russia).

We remind that general prize fund of the Chess Festival “Moscow Open 2008” reaches 5000 000 rubles. The winner of «Open A» will take 500 000 rubles, the winner of «Open C» - 150 000 rubles.

Games of the 3rd round will take place on Monday, February 04, 2008.
